Tiny implants ‘hold back’ an enlarged prostate

Prostatic urethral lift (UroLift®) is a new approach to treating an enlarged prostate, otherwise known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. BPH is characterized by a variety of urinary symptoms including frequency, urgency and a weak or interrupted stream. Symptoms occur when the prostate grows and squeezes the urethra, which is the tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.

Unlike other BPH procedures, UroLift does not cut, heat, or remove excess prostate tissue. Instead, it uses tiny implants to hold back areas of the prostate that obstruct normal urine flow. Symptom relief is almost immediate and there is continued improvement up to two weeks.

UroLift implants resemble tiny bands – the number used is determined by the size and anatomy of the patient’s prostate. Typically four to six implants are required.

Men with specific prostate anatomies are candidates for this quick and outpatient procedure.
