Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States. They can be bacterial or viral-based, and are usually spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Previously called venereal diseases, STDs are serious illnesses that require treatment. Most produce few or no symptoms and can be cured. However, some STDs cannot be cured.

Some common STDs and their symptoms may include:

  • Chlamydia. Usually no symptoms but may produce discharge, pain or itchiness in the genital or rectal area.
  • Genital herpes. Can cause blister-like sores on the genitals.
  • Genital warts. Produces small painless bumps in the genital or anal areas.
  • Gonorrhea. Produces a discharge from vagina or penis; painful urination.
  • Hepatitis B and C. Abdominal pain, dark urine and yellowing of skin. May not have symptoms initially.
  • HIV/AIDS. Fatigue, night sweats, chills, fever, weight loss and frequent infections. May not have symptoms initially.
  • Syphilis. Mild symptoms, often goes undetected initially. Painless genital sores.

Treatment

Depends upon the type of STD and may include:

Medication
Laser (heat) therapy
Cryotherapy (use of extreme cold)
